My Global Issue Project

What Is The Glopbal Isssure Project

The Global Studies Global Issue Project is an assignment where the juniors in the program choose a global issue that is meaningful or significant to them. The goal of the project is to research and analyze the issue, understand its causes and impacts, and explore how it affects people around the world. Through this project, students connect global topics to real-world challenges and possible solutions.

“Should immigration enforcement policies take an individual’s health status into account before deportation, and if so, how might that change enforcement practices?”

Project Question

My workshop, Immigrant Healthcare Access: Analyzing ICE Deportations and Their Medical and Socioeconomic Impacts on Immigrant Healthcare Access, focuses on how immigration enforcement can affect the health and well-being of immigrant communities. In this presentation, I highlight how deportation policies today can disrupt medical treatment, limit access to healthcare services, and create long-term socioeconomic challenges for immigrants and their families.

The goal of this workshop is to draw attention to the many healthcare issues that immigrants continue to face that are often overlooked in public discussions. These include barriers such as fear of seeking medical care, loss of insurance or treatment during deportation proceedings, and the difficulty of accessing adequate healthcare after being deported.

I chose this topic because I wanted to explore an issue that involves both public health and human rights. As someone who comes from a family of immigrants, this topic is also personally meaningful to me. I have seen how immigration policies can affect families and communities. Additionally, a family friend of mine recently passed away after being deported and was unable to receive the medical care he needed in the country he was returned to. To respect his privacy, I chose to use other similar documented cases in my presentation while still highlighting the broader issue.

Through this workshop, I hope to encourage discussion about how immigration enforcement can influence healthcare access and to emphasize the importance of recognizing immigrant health as a critical public health and human rights concern.
